Austria is not only the geographical heart of the Europe, but in recent years it has been assuming a central position in the eyes of many international operators who see the country as an ideal distribution centre and logistic hub between East and West.
The level of industrial productivity has historically been high, and is now on a par with that of Germany. Austrian industry has succeeded in posting high productivity gains.
Furniture production in Austria represents about 2% of total manufacturing. The majority of furniture produced is directed abroad, with the main destinations being Germany, Italy and Switzerland, which together absorb about 60% of total exports. Austrian imports increased in 2008. One of the reasons for this growth, apart from the increase in flows of furniture from Germany and Italy, has been the increase in imports from Asia and the Pacific, especially from China.
