Summary: a brief statement of the content of the report

The United Kingdom is today one of the top world furniture importers, ranking fourth after the United States, Germany and France. In Europe the country has shown the highest increase in furniture imports in absolute terms over the last decade and this, among other reasons, has been the engine of growth for furniture trade worldwide.

The consequences of the global downturn were particularly strong in the United Kingdom, but the country still ranks third among the European countries as a furniture importer. The recovery of the furniture sector is expected in a two years span, but yet there are some positive factors that sustain the industry as its long tradition, the national fairs which attract visitors from all over the world and the fact that the exchange rate is now favourable for foreign buyers.

One of the most promising market segments, according to local experts, is children’s and infant furniture.
The UK contract market, which is the second in Europe, after Germany, is also to expand.

CSIL study The furniture industry in the United Kingdom offers a comprehensive picture of the furniture industry in the UK, providing trends in furniture production and consumption, furniture imports and exports.
