Belgium, thanks to its favourable geographical location between Germanic and Latin Europe, is definitely an ideal place for trading. High productivity and good fiscal conditions are further to enhance the role of this small but lively country within the European furniture industry.
Furniture imports in Belgium are worth about Eur 2.6 billion, exports account for 80% of total furniture production: France and the Netherlands are the main destinations of Belgian furniture and, although the global crisis, exports to these two countries increased during 2008 (France +8% and the Netherlands +3%). Among the extra-EU countries the main destinations are China, the USA and Russia.
Upholstered furniture is the most important segment of furniture production, and it is mainly produced by local manufacturers while foreign penetration remains particularly relevant in the kitchen segment where all the leading manufacturing firms are controlled by companies from Germany, Sweden, France and Italy.
