Summary: a brief statement of the content of the report
Germany is the leading Western European country both as a furniture consumer and as a furniture importer, and it ranks second (after Italy) for furniture production and exports.
The country accounts for about one quarter of total Western European furniture consumption, it is a market that has shown continuous growth over the years and which is open to furniture imports. In 2008 German furniture consumption decreased slightly, interrupting the positive trend that had lasted since 2004. The decrease was, however, modest if compared to those recorded by Italy, the United Kingdom and Spain.
German furniture production accounts for almost a quarter of total European production, and many leading European players are headquartered in the country.
German furniture exports have increased at an average rate of +8% over the last five years, compared to the +1.3% recorded by Italy and the +3% of France.
