Summary: a brief statement of the content of the report

With its stress on industrial production driven by exports and fuelled by foreign investments, China has witnessed an unprecedented period of growth in the last two decades and today it is the first producer of furniture worldwide, alone manufacturing about a quarter of the total furniture output worldwide. China not only ranks first for its furniture production, but also for its exports, that impressively increased by 1,970% in comparison with year 1996. In addition, with a population of 1,300 million and the increasing disposable income among households, domestic consumption is fast growing. The country is becoming the largest consumer market in the world: Chinese demand for furniture is second only to the United States. This vibrant performance suggests that China will play a key role in driving the recovery of the furniture industry after the global downturn.

This updated 2009 edition of CSIL market research The furniture industry in China including Hong Kong offers a comprehensive picture of the furniture industry in China and in Hong Kong, providing indicators on furniture production and consumption, furniture imports and exports. For China, factors determining the demand for furniture are also examined.

Chinese furniture production and consumption are broken down by product (upholstered furniture, office furniture, kitchen furniture, other furniture). Imports and exports are differentiated by country and product (office furniture, kitchen furniture, upholstered furniture, non-upholstered seats, bedroom furniture, seats parts and parts of furniture).

Short profiles are provided for the major Chinese and Hong Kong manufacturers of office furniture and home furniture (upholstered furniture, bedrooms, children’s room, kitchens): addresses are given, information on product mix, export activity, employees, turnover, distribution channels, production facilities, quality and environmental certification are included when available.
