Summary: a brief statement of the content of the report

Italy is the leading European furniture exporter and producer. The success of Italian furniture abroad depends on a host of facts: the furnishing industry is at the forefront in terms of quality of planning and product aesthetics.

Italy is also universally recognised as a trendsetter: the Italian manufacturing tradition design is the by-product of a virtuous circle comprising quality workmanship, constant technological innovation applied to processes and products, and a strong creative and pro-active attitude to the marketplace. In addition, the industrial districts have launched and consolidated the process of economic development, characterised by close interaction between companies and the manufacturing system.

Italy, like the other major furniture exporters, has suffered the global slowdown. As a matter of fact, Italian furniture exports decreased by 1 % in 2008, after two years of good growth. Products sold to the main commercial partners of Italy (France, the United Kingdom and Germany, and the United States) all declined. However, exports to Russia recorded a considerable increase.
Looking at productive segments, kitchen furniture is the largest in terms of value. Until some years ago, the upholstered furniture segment was the most important.

CSIL study The furniture industry in the Italy offers a comprehensive picture of the Italian furniture industry, providing trends in furniture production and consumption, furniture imports and exports.

Data are broken down by the main furniture products: office, upholstered furniture, kitchen, bedroom, dining and living room, other seating and other furniture and parts. Trade data are also provided by country of origin/destination.

35 short profiles are provided for the leading Italian furniture manufacturers of office furniture and home furniture: addresses are given, information on product mix, export activity, employees, turnover, brands, parent and subsidiary companies are included when available.
