Summary: a brief statement of the content of the report

In the Netherlands three fifths of demand on the domestic furniture market is satisfied by imports, and half of the furniture produced makes its way abroad, mainly to Germany, Belgium and France. The country is densely populated and outward-looking orientated: the economy, by being one of the most free-market capitalist in the world, heavily depends on foreign trade and it is noted for stable industrial relations, fairly low unemployment and inflation, a sizable current account surplus, and an important role as a European transportation hub.
Office furniture, which is the largest segment in terms of production, has constantly grown over the last six years.
The upholstered furniture segment is fragmented with a large presence of European and Asian suppliers. The Netherlands are also a relevant market for the contract furniture and furnishings industry, accounting for 8% of all contract consumption in Europe.
