Furniture exports by segment. Percentage data 2008-2009

Size of furniture market

Malaysia's furniture industry plays a key role in the country economy. Since the late 1970s the government has considered it as a strategic one and encouraged its development with investment in infrastructures and incentives to export. Therefore, a traditional sector based on small craftsmanship enterprises has gradually transformed into a major industry.

The Malaysian furniture industry has been growing both in terms of consumption and production until the global recession brought a severe contraction in 2009, on the other hand the sector is expected to be able to overcome the current troubles and likely to rapidly recover in the near future thanks to a set of factors. These include the abundant raw material resources; a qualified workforce; attractiveness of foreign investments.

CSIL Market Research Malaysia Furniture Outlook is part of the Country Furniture Outlook Series, covering at present 60 countries.
Each Country Report contains updated furniture statistics, tables, graphs and illustrated maps and information collected through interviews with top furniture companies and sector experts.
