Types of furniture and materials covered

Seats (other than Medical, surgical, dental or veterinary seats, excluding seats of a kind used for aircraft and seats of a kind used for motor vehicles); Upholstered seats; Furniture of a kind used in offices; Furniture of a kind used in the kitchen; Furniture of a kind used in the bedroom; Other furniture (i.e. occasional furniture, garden furniture, bathroom furniture, furniture of a kind used in the living rooms and dining rooms); Parts of furniture. Mattresses and mattress supports are excluded.

In terms of materials, coverage includes metal, wooden, plastic furniture and furniture of cane, osier, bamboo or similar materials.

Data gathering and processing methodology

Production data are estimated on the basis of:

  • Official statistics: statistics on the production of manufactured goods, National Annual Survey of Manufactures available, National Economic Census. Macro economic statistics and forecasts from international institutions
  • Sector documentation (eg trade press, sector associations).
  • Field information collected by CSIL experts who constantly monitor the main manufacturers and distributors, gathering information on their activity, financial performance and strategies.

 

Furniture production data for each country include furniture manufactured domestically only. Offshore production of local firms appears in data for the foreign country where the manufacturing plants are located, independently from ownership of the plants.

Furniture trade data are processed by CSIL mainly on the basis of UN and Eurostat data and other national sources. When statistics are either not available or not completely reliable, CSIL uses mirror statistics.

Furniture trade data refer either to headings 94.01 and 94.03 of the Harmonized System (or Combined Nomenclature), excluding seats of a kind used for aircraft and seats of a kind used for motor vehicles,.

Consumption means apparent consumption at production prices excluding retail markup. It is calculated as follows: production-exports+imports.

Types of upholstered furniture covered

Upholstered furniture includes upholstered seats with metal frames, upholstered seats with wooden frames and seats convertible into beds. It does not include upholstered seats for motor vehicles and aircraft, upholstered swivel seats with height adjustment, upholstered furniture for medical, dental, surgical use and upholstered garden seats.

In terms covering materials production can be divided into three categories:
Fabric covering, Leather covering, Other covering (including microfiber, artificial leather, etc.).

The exports/production and the imports/consumption ratios may be close or even above 100% for countries where there are large amounts of imports for re-export (for example the Netherlands).

Types of product covered

Mattresses include mattresses of cellular rubber or plastic, whether or not covered, with innersprings interiors and of other materials. They don’t include mattress supports, sleeping bags, articles of bedding and similar furnishings.

Mattress trade data were processed by CSIL mainly on the basis of UN, Eurostat data and National sources. When statistics are either not available or not completely reliable, CSIL uses mirror statistics.

Consumption means apparent consumption at production prices excluding retail markup. It is calculated as follows: production-exports+imports.

The exports/production and the imports/consumption ratios may be close or even above 100% for countries where there are large amounts of imports for re-export
