STUDY ON THE IMPACT OF GREEN TRANSITION AND DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION ON THE FURNITURE AND LIGHTING FIXTURE INDUSTRY

Within the framework of a EU  Joint Cluster Initiative aimed at supporting the recovery and business transformation of lighting and furniture SMEs, CSIL was awarded for the provision of market research services to provide an analysis of the status of the green and digital transition in the furniture and lighting fixture sectors and, more specifically, to focus on the effect of sustainability and digitalization drivers on product development trends,  new technologies adoption and on companies’ strategies formulation. The analysis was operated from multiple and differentiated sources, including the involvement of one hundred sector stakeholders through a dedicated survey as well as through a selection of focused case studies.

ANALYSIS OF WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR SUSTAINABILITY IN THE MATTRESS VALUE CHAIN

The client required that CSIL carry out extensive research on the demand for sustainability along the mattress supply chain, investigating the choices of consumers, mattress manufacturers and components (Polyurethane foam) suppliers. CSIL designed a structured questionnaire investigating the importance attributed to sustainability when purchasing/producing mattresses, the criteria used to judge the sustainability contents of products, and the willingness to pay for different sustainable options (recycled content of materials, bio-based materials, CO2 reduction). The questionnaire was submitted to over 2000 European consumers and over 100 industry players.

THE IMPACT OF SUSTAINABILITY REQUIREMENTS ON MATERIALS CHOICE IN THE EU MATTRESS INDUSTRY

This client asked CSIL to investigate the extent to which the mattress supply chain is transforming to pursue sustainability and circularity goals set at the EU level and how companies’ strategies and business models are evolving.

All the main raw materials and components (PU foam, synthetic fibers, latex, natural materials) for mattress production were evaluated based on both their circularity/sustainability profile and for their technical/performance properties. The research was based on focused interactions with about 100 actors operating in the mattress value chain through a wide-reaching online survey and semi-structured in-depth interviews. Additional desk research, including regulatory context review, to integrate and complete the analysis was also performed.

ANALYSIS OF THE RELEVANCE OF SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA IN THE LEATHER SOURCING PROCESS

The client required that CSIL carry out research regarding the demand for sustainable leather within the upholstered furniture industry and to investigate the main criteria used by companies to judge the sustainability content of leather. The methodology consisted of an extensive survey directed to about 100 upholstered furniture manufacturers worldwide to analyze their sourcing process and the relative importance attributed to various aspects, including: animal welfare, energy efficiency and waste reduction in the leather production process, working conditions in the leather supply chain, and leather traceability.
