North America’s Kitchen Cabinet Trade. A Highly Interconnected Region
MARKET INTELLIGENCE
The kitchen furniture market in North America – comprising the US, Canada, and Mexico – is characterised by geographical proximity and a high degree of trade integration. The sector is dominated by companies of different sizes, from large corporations to small local manufacturers and artisans.
The United States is the main market in the area. Most domestic demand is met by local production, which comprises over 6,000 companies and employs more than 95,000 people. Canada is the fifth-largest exporter of kitchen furniture in the world, according to CSIL data, with a value of around 450 million dollars. Of this, 99% is destined for the American market. Mexico, thanks to competitive labour costs, has tripled its exports in recent years, from about USD 50 million in 2019 to about USD 150 million in 2024. Exports of kitchen furniture are almost entirely destined for the American market.
KITCHEN FURNITURE TRADE LANDSCAPE
Exports from North American countries account for only 8% of global kitchen furniture exports. With an overall value amounting to approximately USD 700 million, they reflected a slowdown in both 2023 and 2024.
After the contraction in 2023, kitchen furniture imports to North America have returned to growth in 2024 (preliminary), reaching a value of approximately USD 3 billion.
Imports can be divided into three main groups:
- North American region: representing about 25% of total kitchen furniture imports in 2024.
- Asia-Pacific region: representing about 60% of total imports in 2024, and consisting mainly of low-budget products for large chain stores.
- Europe: accounting for about 10% of total kitchen furniture imports in 2024. Italian, German products, and, to a lesser degree, also from other European countries, are upper-end products, normally in modern styles and mainly destined for the contract segment.
Vietnam is the largest supplier of kitchen furniture to North America, with a market share of around 35% in 2024 (up from 5% in 2019), followed by Malaysia, Italy, Thailand, China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Germany, and Taiwan, China.
Imports from China dropped sharply following the imposition of AD/CVD duties, while imports from all the Asian countries listed above increased. Among the fastest-growing countries, we find Cambodia and Taiwan now ranking in the top positions. China is the seventh-largest supplier of kitchen furniture to the American market, with a share of 3% in 2024 (down from 65% in 2017).
The North American market for kitchen furniture is highly integrated, so the protectionist agenda of the new US administration and the countermeasures taken by Canada and Mexico increase uncertainty about the development of trade within the region, with possible growing costs and supply chain disruptions.
