HawaExpo 2026, key fair in Vietnam only a month away, is preparing to host the ASEAN furniture leadership meeting. The event acts as a platform where strategic transformation, encompassing compliance, design evolution, and supply chain integrity, will be showcased.
As one of the largest furniture exporters worldwide, Vietnam proves to be not merely a manufacturing hub. In a global trade environment characterized by fragmentation and volatility, Vietnam has emerged as a stabilizing force. HawaExpo 2026, scheduled for March 4-7 in Ho Chi Minh City, positions itself as a gateway for those seeking to view this global furniture hub through a lens of realism and potential.
The “anti-transshipment” shield: Volume and verification
Perhaps the most critical function of HawaExpo 2026 is its position as a “filtered” gateway to the Vietnamese furniture market. The risk of “transshipment” is a primary concern for the exhibition, which aims at enforcing a strict “verified platform” mechanism.
The event features a curated selection of over 700 exhibitors, with a mandate that 80% must be verified Vietnamese manufacturers. The vetting process transcends simple registration: it validates actual production capacity and export history transparency. This structure ensures that buyers connect with authentic manufacturers rather than shell companies or trading intermediaries. By strictly guaranteeing the legitimacy of the “Made in Vietnam” origin, the fair creates a transparent trade lane, protecting importers from legal exposure and ensuring that the tariff benefits enjoyed under the EVFTA (EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement) are fully compliant and secure.
Matching buyers’ mindset: The convergence of sustainability and design
The demand for sustainability equally with quality and aesthetics goods, creates a complex series of requirements, most notably the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Rather than viewing this as a barrier, the Vietnamese sector has treated compliance as a competitive advantage. Organizers of HawaExpo2026 report that over 70% of participating exhibitors have passed rigorous internal vetting processes for EUDR preparedness, offering European buyers’ immediate transparency regarding traceability.
An example is Nghia Son Furniture Company which, with over 70% of their portfolio dedicated to the European market, has long operated under the strictures required by major retailers such as Kingfisher, Bauhaus, and OBI. Mr. Harry Nguyen, Sales Director at Nghia Son Furniture, notes that despite general industry anxiety regarding new compliance standards, their operations were pre-calibrated for this shift. “Our company currently utilizes 100% FSC-certified wood, operates under a full FSC Chain of Custody (COC) system, and maintains active certifications in BSCI, ISO 9001, and CTPAT.” – he adds. This represents a “plug-and-play” compliance solution, eliminating the reputational risks often associated with offshore sourcing.
Beyond compliance, HawaExpo 2026 will display a move up in the value chain, shifting from OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) to ODM (Original Design Manufacturing). This evolution is most visible in almost all key export categories, including wooden chairs, wooden indoor furniture, where the industry is moving away from standard execution toward complex material processing, inhouse R&D and designing.
The 40% expansion of the dedicated design footprint underscores the organizers’ commitment to presenting the Vietnamese industry in its contemporary context. A prime example is Teemo, which will debut at the 2026 edition with a collection of dozens of models fully designed and engineered in Vietnam. HawaExpo 2026 will showcase how Vietnamese manufacturers are now adept at combining wood with mixed materials, such as sintered stone, architectural metal, and sustainable woven fibers, catering directly to preference for natural aesthetics. Other exhibitors in the mid-to-high-end segment also promise to bring their latest collections.
A regional connection point
HawaExpo 2026 will also host the 44th Annual Meeting of the ASEAN Furniture Industries Council (AFIC), marking the transfer of Chairmanship from Thailand to Vietnam. The Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City (HAWA) will assume leadership for the next two-year term, placing Vietnam at the helm of regional policy. Running concurrently is the “Asia Rising – Design Loading” forum, where regional leaders will discuss the integration of Asia into the global design-production value chain. For foreign buyers, this elevates the event from a marketplace to a strategic intelligence hub, offering direct access to policy updates and regional analytics.
Also, recognizing the logistical challenges for international executives, the organizers have implemented an Executive Buyer Programme. This initiative includes practical support such as airport transfers, shuttle networks, and accommodation arrangements. The program focuses on facilitating B2B matchmaking and factory visits, allowing buyers to validate production claims on-site.
Reflecting on the industry’s trajectory, Mr. Phung Quoc Man, Representative of the HawaExpo Organizing Committee, emphasizes the sector’s fortitude. “Amidst the continuous volatility of global trade, the results achieved by our business community reflect the sheer resilience and adaptability of the entire Vietnamese wood industry,” he states. Guided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the sector aims for an increased export target for 2026. Yet, as Mr. Man notes, the priority extends beyond statistics: “Our focus remains on troubleshooting obstacles alongside businesses and constructing a foundation for sustainable, long-term growth.“.
