What is the impact of the international trade policy environment on business activity? Percentage values

Impatto del contesto globale di politica commerciale sull’attività aziendale
Source: CSIL Survey (October 2025)

CSIL estimates for 2025 confirm a gradual improvement in the Italian furniture sector. However, weak international demand and modest economic growth still result in a contraction in both the domestic and foreign markets, although less intense than in the previous year.
Uncertainty related to international trade policies has also made strategic planning more complex for companies. The expected improvement in the international context and domestic demand over the coming years should support a recovery of the sector, with positive effects across all main production segments.

The CSIL report “Rapporto di Previsione sul settore dell’arredamento in Italia” (Italian language) has been describing the scenario and trends of the Italian furniture sector for over forty years. The 2025 edition provides historical data for 2019-2024, preliminary figures for 2025, and forecasts for 2026-2028 on furniture production, consumption, and international trade, along with an analysis of prices, competitiveness, and foreign demand.

This study covers the sector as a whole and its main production segments, integrating statistical data, economic indicators, and information gathered directly from companies.

TRENDS IN THE ITALIAN FURNITURE SECTOR AND MAIN SEGMENTS
After a macroeconomic overview of global and Italian GDP and international trade, the report analyses in detail the trends of the Italian furniture sector, highlighting:

  • revenue, production, and domestic consumption trends;
  • main challenges perceived by companies;
  • the role of territorial districts and investment strategies implemented by businesses.

Significant attention is given to the main segments, with forecasts on production, consumption, prices, and international trade for:

  • upholstered furniture,
  • kitchen furniture,
  • other home furniture,
  • office furniture.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE: FOREIGN DEMAND AND MARKET OPENNESS

The section dedicated to international furniture trade analyses:

  • foreign demand for Italian furniture and its prospects;
  • Italy’s competitiveness in the global furniture sector, with comparisons among the main exporting countries;
  • Italian furniture imports by country of origin and the evolution of market openness;
  • potential foreign demand by geographic area and growth trajectories of emerging markets.

The report also examines trends in furniture production prices and consumer confidence, the relationship between income and furniture consumption, and the link between the housing market and furniture demand.

CURRENT CONTEXT OF THE ITALIAN FURNITURE SECTOR AND STRATEGIES
To understand the dynamics of the current scenario, the impact of the global trade policy context, and the strategies adopted by companies in response to the international environment, CSIL involved a panel of sector companies through interviews and an online survey conducted in October 2025. The main results are presented in the report.
