The CSIL Report ‘Rapporto di Previsione sul settore dell’arredamento in Italia’ (Italian language) provides an in-depth and updated analysis of the Italian furniture industry, based on over 40 years of expertise. The 2024 edition presents a comprehensive analysis of the current status and future outlook with historical data for 2018-2023, preliminary estimates for 2024, and forecasts for 2025-2027, covering production, consumption, international trade, prices, competitiveness, and international demand for furniture.

Following an overview of the Italian and global economic context, the Report delves into the performance of the furniture sector as a whole and by segment: upholstered furniture, kitchen furniture, other home furniture, and office furniture.

The analysis of the international trade of furniture includes:

  • the demand for Italian furniture abroad and its future prospects;
  • Italy’s competitiveness in the global furniture sector;
  • Italian furniture imports from key foreign trading partners;
  • the openness of the Italian furniture sector.

In addition to gathering statistical data from official sources (macroeconomic and sector data), the report also considers responses from interviews and an online CSIL survey. This survey involved a panel of companies operating in the sector and aimed to unveil perceived challenges and strategies for facing an expected period of high uncertainty.

What are the prospects for the furniture sector in Italy? This detailed study is an essential tool:

  • for an overview of the current status and perspectives of the Italian furniture sector;
  • to analyse the performance of the Italian furniture industry in the international context;
  • for the budgeting and its periodic reviews of companies operating in the sector;
  • to define business strategies;
  • for price policy control;
  • to monitor the general trend of furniture markets and make investment decisions related to foreign markets.

Net exports of furniture in Italy, 2018-2027. Million euro and % change at current prices

After two years of unexpectedly strong growth, the furniture sector in Italy began to contract in 2023. Inflation, rising interest rates, and a global environment marked by significant uncertainty have greatly impacted consumption and investments.
CSIL’s estimates for 2024 outline an improving outlook for the sector, although keeps facing challenges in both domestic and international demand. In the coming years, the Italian furniture sector is expected to gradually recover, gaining more momentum starting in 2026, with subsequent impacts across different segments.
The trade balance will remain largely positive throughout the forecast period.
