Key Insights from the Report

Germany remains the European anchor for the furniture industry, showing signs of a structural recovery after a volatile period. After a challenging cycle where total home furniture consumption dipped from a peak of EUR 33 billion in 2022 to an estimated EUR 29 billion in 2025, the market is entering a “recovery phase”.

German consumers remain among the most resilient in Europe, even if spending has cooled from the highs of the pandemic era.

Import Dynamics: Import penetration is rising, with the import-to-consumption ratio hitting 31% in 2025. Poland remains the primary supplier (31.7% share), but China has shown an aggressive recovery.

Germany is proving that even a “mature” market can reinvent itself. By blending E-commerce (now stabilized at 14% of sales) with urban design studios and advanced logistics, Germany is providing the rest of Europe with a successful model for the hybrid retail era.

The retail landscape is marked by a “survival of the fittest” amongst big-box retailers and a strategic pivot toward urban accessibility.

  • Consolidation Moves: The Krieger-Gruppe is refining its portfolio by converting its Möbel Kraft location in Taucha into a Möbel Höffner. Meanwhile, XXXLutz is expanding its presence with a major new opening in Rangsdorf planned for Spring 2026.
  • The Big Retrenchment: Tessner Holding is currently in the news for trimming its Roller brand footprint, with planned closures in Villingen-Schwenningen and Crailsheim set for June 2026.
  • The IKEA Evolution: The Swedish giant is aggressively expanding its “Planning Studios” in city centers and malls like Stuttgart and Potsdam.
  • E-tailers Hitting the High Street: Pure-play digital brands are desperate for physical “touchpoints.” Emma Sleep recently opened its first physical storefront in Hamburg, and Westwing has secured a prime spot on Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm.
