Canada Mattress Industry: Key Insights
Canada’s mattress industry has long been structurally tied to the US — most domestic manufacturers operate as subsidiaries or licensees of American brands, and the US is both the leading import source and, increasingly, export destination. That dependency is now at the centre of the market’s biggest story: a Canadian retailer’s bid to acquire the bankrupt US manufacturer that supplies much of the region, which would reverse the usual direction of cross-border ownership.
-
Market trends
A fairly open market, with imports — mainly from the US, Mexico and Indonesia — covering close to a third of consumption, though that share has eased slightly as sourcing shifts (US imports down sharply, Indonesia up). Exports, overwhelmingly bound for the US, have grown but remain a modest share of output — this is not yet an export-driven industry, though the direction is shifting that way.
-
Competitive landscape
Manufacturing is fragmented, made up largely of Canadian producers operating as subsidiaries, partners or licensees of major US brands, concentrated in Quebec and Ontario. Retail, by contrast, is far more consolidated, with Sleep Country Canada the dominant specialty player. Investment has mostly flowed in from the US at the manufacturing level — the standout exception now being Sleep Country’s own bid to acquire the bankrupt US player Sleep Number, an outbound move that would mark a reversal of that pattern.
