China Mattress Industry: Key Insights

China remains the world’s largest mattress producer, but the market is entering a new phase. After a decade of urbanisation-led growth, domestic demand has softened since its 2021 peak, and manufacturers are shifting strategy — leaning harder into product innovation to defend margins at home while chasing growth abroad.

  • Market trends

China is a largely closed, domestically-driven market: consumption is almost entirely met by local production, with imports accounting for under 1%. Exports remain a secondary but growing outlet — around a tenth of production — and are being redirected away from the US, hit by antidumping duties, toward Asian neighbours (Japan, Australia, South Korea) and, increasingly, Europe, now the fastest-growing outlet.

  • Competitive landscape

The industry is fragmented, with a large number of small and medium manufacturers serving regional markets — though concentration is somewhat higher here than in other furniture segments. Leading groups — Sleemon, DeRUCCI, KUKA, Xilinmen, Sinomax — are consolidating share domestically while investing on two fronts: expanding capacity at home in established clusters (Guangdong, Zhejiang) and building new production abroad, in Southeast Asia, Mexico and the US, to get closer to end markets and reduce tariff exposure.

  • Recent moves

Overseas expansion and vertical integration continue to define deal activity in the sector.
