India Mattress Industry: Key Insights

India is the world’s third-largest mattress market. Market growth is supported by structural drivers including rapid urbanization, the expansion of the middle class, rising disposable incomes, growth in the real estate and hospitality sectors, and increasing consumer awareness of quality sleep solutions.

  • Market trends

The Indian market is highly self-sufficient and driven by domestic demand. Imports satisfy a mere 1% of the market and exports limited to 2% of production. A unique aspect of this industry is the significant presence of the unorganized and informal sector, which is estimated to represent most of the market. In contrast, the organized sector, while still limited, is experiencing steady growth.

  • Competitive landscape

Highly fragmented, with the unorganised and informal sector still representing the bulk of activity. The organised segment, though smaller, is consolidating fast and drawing outside interest: Sheela Foam’s acquisition of Kurlon reshaped the top tier, while international premium brands — Hästens, Magniflex — are actively investing in Indian retail footprint even as domestic players expand their own manufacturing capacity.

  • Recent moves

Financialisation is now a defining theme, alongside continued foreign entry.

    • Hästens’ plan to open 20–25 experience centres in India by 2028
    • Duroflex’s IPO filing, having received SEBI’s observation letter (February 2026)
    • Wakefit’s stock exchange listing following its December 2025 IPO
    • Godrej Interio’s distributor and retail expansion push into Tier II–III markets
