Sweden Upholstered Furniture Market: Key Insights

Sweden’s upholstered furniture industry is a mature, design-led market where growth is increasingly linked to international trade integration rather than domestic expansion, competing on Scandinavian design and product differentiation rather than cost, across both a sizeable residential business and a distinct contract/design segment serving offices and hospitality.

  • Market trends

A fairly open market: close to two-thirds of consumption is met by imports, led by Poland, Lithuania and China in roughly equal measure. Nearly half of domestic production is exported in turn, mainly within the Nordic region and to Germany — Sweden trades actively in both directions rather than being simply import-reliant.

  • Competitive landscape

Led by established design-focused manufacturers (Scapa Inter, Conform, Furninova, Blå Station, Swedese) competing on differentiation rather than cost, alongside a distinct contract-furniture segment serving architects and institutional clients. Investment activity has been limited and largely domestic in scope, with brand consolidation under shared ownership structures (Affari of Sweden and Brafab) more prominent than major cross-border deals.
