Mattress imports, 6 major importing countries, 2012-2021. US$ million

The world mattress market amounts to around USD 35 billion. It is a growing sector whenlooking at the last ten years, and the main growth drivers include a continuous increase in spending and evolving consumption habits of the emerging countries giving more importance to the quality of sleep, and good performance of advanced economies, which registered moderate growth. The negative impact of the pandemic on the mattress sector was much more limited if compared to other industries.
The world trade of mattresses shows an escalating number of restrictive trade measures imposed by the USA on imports from China first, and from other export-oriented countries starting from 2021. The USA imports of mattresses decreased, and China disappeared as the leading mattress supplier to this country in favor of Indonesia and Mexico. Measures are impacting trade flows also in terms of manufacturers’ strategies for competitive advantages and production relocation.
