KEY MARKET INSIGHTS

The European upholstered furniture market is a large, high-ticket segment, accounting for around 15% of global upholstered furniture market. Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and the Netherlands are the largest markets in the area, jointly accounting for nearly two thirds of European consumption. Overall, between 2019 and 2025, the market grew by over 20% in terms of value, reaching EUR 18 billion, while remained stable in terms of quantity, reflecting the surge in furniture prices that characterized years 2021-2023.

  • Five countries account for over 60% of total European consumption. Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and the Netherlands represent the largest upholstered furniture markets in Europe, with demand concentration remaining high.
  • Modest recovery projected for 2026, stronger rebound expected in 2027. CSIL confirms that the European upholstered furniture market is stabilising after a period of weakness. Looking ahead, the outlook points to modest growth in 2026 and a more sustained recovery in 2027: every country returns to positive territory, but the rebound is more pronounced in the Eastern markets.

  • Rising import penetration from Asia reshaping competitive dynamics. Import penetration from extra-European suppliers continues to increase, particularly from China, reshaping sourcing strategies and intensifying competitive pressure in key European markets. Germany, France and the United Kingdom are largest importers from China.
  • Retail channel evolution across Europe. The main channel for distribution of upholstered furniture remains the furniture chains (such as IKEA, XXXLutz, among the leading). The role of upholstered furniture specialist chains (for example, Poltronesofà, DFS) is increasing and differ consistently across countries, reflecting different supply chain structure. Independent retailers have progressively lost market share to organised players, but remain a structurally relevant channel in Europe, particularly in Southern Europe. E-commerce — including both pure e-tailers such as Amazon and Otto and the online operations of brick-and-mortar retailers has expanded continuously over the last decade, together with the emergence of D2C brands built around modular upholstered furniture across multiple European markets.
  • Product supply in the upholstered furniture sector remains highly diversified and strongly country-specific, particularly in terms of product types, motion functions, and covering materials. From a product perspective, modular seating systems represent the fastest-growing format. At the same time, the share of fabric-upholstered furniture in total upholstered furniture production has continued to increase over the past five years. According to CSIL analysis the incidence of motion functions within total upholstered furniture production has remained broadly stable, with demand structurally concentrated in the medium and medium-low market segments.
