According to CSIL, 2017 was a positive year for the office furniture sector in Europe. Despite persistent uncertainties, the European production reached EUR 8,780 million in 2017 posting a 2% growth and reinforcing the performance of the previous year.
Office furniture consumption in Europe increased by 2.2% in 2017 reaching a total value of EUR 8,459 million. Among the largest Western European markets Austria, France, Italy and Spain outperformed the European average (+2.2%)

The Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) hosted its first timber conference on 18 October 2018, at the Meridien Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, along with other sector experts from Finland, Switzerland and Malaysia.
Sylvia Weichenberger, CSIL Partner and Senior Expert, was invited as a guest speaker.
The 24th China International Furniture Expo (Furniture China 2018) and its concurrent event, Maison Shanghai 2018, successfully concluded on 14 September in Pudong, Shanghai.
During the four-day exhibition, the two shows presented thousands of furniture products and home decorations with around 3,500 exhibitors in SNIEC and SWEECC

Muar, recently declared the “Furniture City of Malaysia” by the government, will take centre stage at Southeast Asia’s largest industry show next year when the annual Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) opens its doors again from March 8- 11.
Fresh from its biggest expansion in 2018, MIFF will celebrate its 25th anniversary sharing the limelight with Muar, the driving force that accounts for 70% of Malaysian furniture exports to over 160 countries including top destinations, the United States, Singapore, Japan, Australia and Britain.

According to CSIL, world consumption and production of mattresses have grown over the last decade, with different performances among different regions.
Globally, mattress production confirmed to grow in 2017. The value of mattresses produced worldwide increased by 40% since 2008 and it is forecasted to further increase in the time frame 2019- 2022.

In a recent survey that involved around one hundred European office furniture distributors, a category which is shifting today from being simple suppliers of furniture items, to become providers of service, consultancy and complete solutions, CSIL tried to understand and describe the main sector’s trends in the coming years.
On June 18th, the international exhibition organizer – Informa, announced the formal merger with UBM. On occasion of this grand combination, UBM Sinoexpo will introduce a wider range of B2B market capabilities and international advantages, and strongly support the two upcoming furniture exhibitions of Pudong this September.
Furniture China and Maison Shanghai

According to CSIL, the furniture market is forecasted to grow worldwide in the next years. The fastest growing region continues to be Asia and Pacific, with all other regions growing between 1% and 3% in real terms.
In terms of international trade of furniture, all the leading markets have shown a greater degree of openness in the last decade. Naturally there are still important differences among various national markets.
France is the fifth largest furniture exporter in Europe, the eleventh at a global level. With a production of furniture reaching around Eur 7 billion in 2017 and an export on production ratio of about 30% (23% in 2012), the country shows a large potential in the coming years.
The show will be held on Sep 10-13 in Shanghai under the brand new theme of "An example of Global Lifestyle".
Since 2018, every session of CIFF Shanghai will be coorganized by China Foreign Trade Guangzhou Exhibition General Corp. ("CFTE") and Red Star Macalline, China's largest furniture chained shopping mall.

According to CSIL, the European consumption of upholstered furniture was worth over Eur 14 billion in 2017, with different market performances across countries. Overall, the market increased over the last years and benefitted from an improved economic environment.
Germany is the biggest upholstery consuming country, followed by the UK and France. The New EU Members, although accounting for only 13% of the total European consumption, are the best performing markets.
