Future perspectives for the European furniture sector

The EU furniture sector is highly integrated, both from a market and an industry perspective. Retailing activities and value chains are often organized on a European scale. Europe still plays an important role in the global furniture industry.

Coming to the future perspectives for the European furniture sector, the intensity of the contraction and the subsequent growths are largely interdependent across countries.

The world mattress industry. Resilient in 2020, recovering in 2021 and 2022

The world mattress industry registered an overall good performance, better than expected during the first months of the crisis. Good performance results from the increasing demand from large markets, the US and China in particular.

According to CSIL estimates, the value of mattress consumption reached USD 29 billion in 2018, recording no growth in 2019 and 2020. However, particularly during the second half of the year 2020, the increasing demand occurred in parallel with important supply chain disruptions worldwide, together with the increase of raw material prices.

The World upholstered furniture industry

The world upholstery industry has been remarkably successful in recovering from the crisis in 2020. The pandemic-induced contraction was limited in size because consumers have often allocated to furniture substantial portions of income made available from the decreased expenditure for restaurants, vacations, and other leisure activities.

World upholstery consumption decreased by 5% in current US$ in 2020. Return of consumption to the pre-pandemic level is likely to happen already in 2021 for the world as a whole, with different speeds of recovery across countries.

European office furniture to recover following different paradigms

The CSIL outlook for the European area shows a recovery of office furniture consumption in real terms of 2% in 2021.

What emerges is a complex picture with an initial return to offices but not at pre-pandemic occupancy levels.

The office furniture world outlook

The office furniture sector is facing the consequences of the pandemic. Strong change of habits and people's adaptation to new circumstances, spaces, and technology, forced sector companies to operate some changes.

All major sources underline that remote working and working from home will increase in the coming years, but this will not necessarily be a replacement for office spaces. Fluidity will come in the form of working from a variety of locations, reflecting the diversity of tasks and the preferences of employees.

E-commerce. Furniture industry developments during the pandemic

World furniture consumption during 2020 has been inevitably affected by the spread of the pandemic, which forced well over 100 countries worldwide to institute either a full or a partial lockdown in different periods of the year, affecting billions of people, who had to change in part their consumption habits.

Under those circumstances, the e-commerce channel showed an opposite trend with the global value of furniture sold online reaching a double-digit increase, now representing 10% of furniture consumption at end-user prices on a world scale.
