The office furniture sector is facing the consequences of the pandemic. Strong change of habits and people's adaptation to new circumstances, spaces, and technology, forced sector companies to operate some changes.
All major sources underline that remote working and working from home will increase in the coming years, but this will not necessarily be a replacement for office spaces. Fluidity will come in the form of working from a variety of locations, reflecting the diversity of tasks and the preferences of employees.

World furniture consumption during 2020 has been inevitably affected by the spread of the pandemic, which forced well over 100 countries worldwide to institute either a full or a partial lockdown in different periods of the year, affecting billions of people, who had to change in part their consumption habits.
Under those circumstances, the e-commerce channel showed an opposite trend with the global value of furniture sold online reaching a double-digit increase, now representing 10% of furniture consumption at end-user prices on a world scale.

The e-commerce mattress market is experiencing a time of growth, compared to the retail mattress market and, in particular, to other segments of the furniture industry. A fast increase in online sales is registered among the largest home furniture and mattress retailers (in particular e-tailers and online mattress companies) in the first half of 2020.

During the first half of 2020, the outbreak of Covid-19 has brought strong effects worldwide, affecting the furniture and the mattress markets, both from the demand and the supply side. The consequences on mattress consumption are still uncertain and may vary widely from country to country depending on the severity of the contagion, the length of the lockdown, the status of the economy in early 2020, and the ability to use resources to assist in the recovery.
CSIL recently processed sector forecasts (2020 and 2021) for major markets (and geographical areas) providing insights into the sector’s development in the first half of 2020, included in the report “The World Mattress Industry”
According to CSIL, the world upholstered furniture consumption is forecasted to decrease in 2020, but registering a lower decrease if compared to the whole furniture industry and rebounding faster in 2021.
The consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic on the world upholstered furniture consumption depend largely on the ability of the largest markets to mobilize resources to assist in the recovery and on the creation of opportunities for upholstery exporting countries to stimulate local consumption to absorb upholstered furniture made available as a consequence of a decrease in exports.
These forecasts are included in the CSIL report “The World Upholstered Furniture Industry” issued in June 2020.
