The Italian Kitchen Furniture Sector: Key Trends
MARKET INTELLIGENCE
The Italian kitchen furniture sector continues to undergo a phase of consolidation and innovation. After the two-year boom following the pandemic period, the business outputs recorded a modest decline in the last time frame (in terms of value), influenced by economic factors such as inflation and a general slowdown in the global economy.
According to CSIL, the production of Italian kitchen furniture reaches approximately 950,000 units. In 2024, the growth in foreign demand, particularly for high-end kitchens, against the backdrop of a still contracting domestic market, led to slight negative performance for the sector, although it marked an improvement on the previous year. However, we need to go back to 2007 to find a level of production like that recorded by Italian kitchen furniture production over the last three years.
MAIN TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENTS
In recent years, production concentration in Italy has increased, with the top five Italian kitchen furniture manufacturers accounting for over 40% of production. The impact of exports on production has grown significantly over the last decade, reaching over 30% in 2024, with a significant portion remaining within Europe and growing in non-European countries’ markets. The United States remains the second-largest destination market overall, but significant growth rates have been observed for exports to Middle East countries and the Asian market, confirming the dynamism of Italian companies in international markets. Smart technology is increasingly in kitchen furniture.

The Italian kitchen furniture sector has confirmed its strong focus on innovation. Household appliances are one of the main drivers of technological evolution, together with embedded lighting, and contribute significantly to the sector’s overall turnover. The significant growth of the Home Comfort category has confirmed the increasing demand from Italian consumers for products that “simplify everyday life”. The integration of IoT and AI has enabled the development of features such as inventory management in refrigerators and customised cooking settings in ovens. According to CSIL estimates, built-in appliances account for over 25% of total kitchen sales in Italy.
Rising demand for customised and multifunctional kitchen spaces. Kitchens integrated with living areas now account for almost 60% of sales in the Italian market, making the kitchen feel that much more social. Open space layouts and modular furniture designs became more prevalent, and integrated lighting has become an essential part of kitchen design, experiencing exponential growth in recent years. The ‘Modern’ segment has still gone up, and now its share is around 60% in value. ‘Neutral’ shades and white, in endless shades, confirming their dominant position.
Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Materials: Over the last decade, sustainability strategies have affected the entire production cycles of companies, absorbing increasing shares of investments. Manufacturers increasingly adopted recycled materials, natural finishes, and low-impact production methods, paying particular attention to creating products and solutions that are designed for a long lifespan. A CSIL survey among over 400 specialist kitchen retailers in Italy confirmed the growing importance of environmental issues among consumers, with particular emphasis on sustainability, ecosystem integrity, economic efficiency, and social equity.
THE EUROPEAN CONTEXT
Over the medium term (2019–2024), the European kitchen furniture sector recorded an average growth of approximately 2% in value, while production volumes declined by around 4%. It is interesting to notice that the performance between values and units has been quite aligned in 2024, underlining the low impact of prices after two years of remarkable inflation growth.
Out of the total volume, around 1.2 million kitchens (valued at EUR 4.6 billion at factory price) were exported by manufacturing countries. Noting that about 80% of the exports remain inside the European perimeter, while the remaining 20% is destined overseas, primarily North America, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East.
On the other side, the extra-European imports are negligible as the market is almost totally supplied by the manufacturing activities within the continent. Italy is the world’s second-largest exporter of kitchen furniture after Germany, followed by Poland, Spain, and Denmark.
EUROPE. TOP FIVE EXPORTERS OF KITCHEN FURNITURE 2019-2024. EUR MILLION

The kitchen furniture sector historically shows a positive trade balance. The difference between exports and imports amounted to EUR 1,200 million in 2024 and progressively reduced since 2021.
Net exporters of kitchen furniture are Germany, Italy, Poland, Denmark, Spain, Portugal and Lithuania. While for Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, imports are by far higher than exports.
